Brock Purdy Injury Update: 49ers QB Returns to Practice! Kittle Back Soon? (2025)

The San Francisco 49ers are facing a challenging period as key players grapple with injuries, casting a shadow over their upcoming game against the Atlanta Falcons.

This week, the spotlight is on quarterback Brock Purdy, who has returned to practice. Purdy, dealing with a toe injury aggravated in Week 4, is expected to be limited, according to coach Kyle Shanahan. This marks a significant step toward his potential return. But here's where it gets interesting: Purdy initially injured his toe in Week 1 against the Seattle Seahawks, missed two games, and then returned in Week 4 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, only to aggravate the injury. The absence of Purdy, coupled with injuries to backup Mac Jones (knee/oblique), has left the Niners without their top two quarterbacks for substantial parts of the season.

During Wednesday's practice, Jones was also limited, though Shanahan indicated he would participate more than Purdy. Shanahan mentioned, "Brock is more limited than Mac." Before Week 4, Purdy was more active, eventually starting the game. The team is closely monitoring both Purdy and Jones as the week progresses, especially with the advantage of extra rest before their Sunday Night Football game against the Falcons, which kicks off at 8:20 PM ET.

Adding a layer of optimism, tight end George Kittle's return is on the horizon. The Niners have opened Kittle's 21-day practice window, hoping to have him available against Atlanta. His presence is expected to boost the offense significantly. Running back Christian McCaffrey highlighted Kittle's impact, stating, "His presence is felt in every aspect of the game, and his energy is so great, so it would be great to have him back out there."

But here's where it gets controversial: The team also faces a setback with linebacker Fred Warner, who underwent surgery on his dislocated and broken right ankle on Tuesday. Coach Shanahan suggested a recovery timeline of approximately three months, but emphasized it's too early to set a definitive schedule.

And this is the part most people miss: The injury report also includes receivers Ricky Pearsall (knee) and Skyy Moore (ankle), who were not expected to practice. Other players limited in practice include receivers Jauan Jennings (ribs, ankle, shoulder), Jordan Watkins (calf), guard Dominick Puni (knee), defensive tackles Kevin Givens (pectoral), CJ West (thumb), and Kalia Davis (hand), along with cornerback Renardo Green (neck).

What do you think? Will Purdy's return make a significant difference? Are the 49ers' injury woes a cause for concern, or can they overcome these challenges? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
