Get ready for a wild ride as we dive into the world of 'Predator: Badlands'! This thrilling film stars the talented Elle Fanning and Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi, who bring an unexpected dynamic to the screen. But here's the twist: these two actors didn't go through the typical chemistry tests or get-to-know-you sessions. Instead, they met briefly during a stunt rehearsal, and before they knew it, they were literally strapped together on set! Talk about an instant connection.
Schuster-Koloamatangi, a native New Zealander, portrays Dek, the franchise's first Yautja protagonist. Dek, feeling rejected by his father, embarks on his first hunt, leading him to crash-land on Genna, a planet known for its extreme danger. Here, he encounters Fanning's character, Thia, a synthetic with a helpful spirit but a damaged body.
And this is where it gets interesting. Due to Thia's condition, Dek has to carry her on his back as they navigate the deadly wilderness. Imagine Fanning's character, with her legless body, being elevated by wires and harnesses to create the illusion of a backpack! It's a unique challenge that adds an extra layer of complexity to their on-screen relationship.
"We had this wheelbarrow-like contraption," Fanning reveals. "I'd be sitting on two wheels, and Dimitrius would pull me up hills. It was quite the setup!"
But here's the part most people miss: the actors' real-life height difference. Despite being similar in stature, their on-screen arrangement required some creative rigging. Fanning's legs had to be digitally removed in post-production, and their stools had to be at different heights when sitting. It's a testament to the dedication and creativity of the entire crew.
And what about the director, Dan Trachtenberg? He seems to have a grand vision for this universe, having taken the reins since 'Prey' in 2022. With the animated 'Predator: Killer of Killers' and now 'Badlands', there's no shortage of story possibilities. Fanning and Schuster-Koloamatangi are eager to see where he takes them next.
"There's so much potential," Fanning says. "I'd follow Dan anywhere. He's a brilliant visionary, and I trust his instincts completely."
So, what do you think? Are you intrigued by the unique dynamic between these actors? And what about the director's vision for the franchise? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments! It's always fascinating to explore the behind-the-scenes stories of our favorite films.
